I have not actually read a non-fiction political book that I can recall. Though I have read novels with political themes.

I don't read political themed books. I do love non-fiction though! I have The Children's Blizzard, The Diana Chronicles, Bill Byrson's new book, something...the thunderbolt kid, The Mayflower, Tony Horowitz's new book, let's see, I have a couple more non-fiction books I can't wait to pick up.
Two more books I am interested to read is Fast Food Nation and Nickel and Dimed.

Merty! I've actually read Nickel and Dimed! <is astounded> Chris owned the book, it was shortish, and the premise sounded interesting so I read in a couple of nights while he was on third shift. I thought it was a good book and a good idea for one but I found her methods and conclusions (in her actions) to be not so great.

A kid from out of state came to Charleston with nothing and started off in a homeless shelter. His goal was to have X amount of money, a drivable vehicle, and a place to live in X many months. He wrote a book about his experience and I've meaning to read it.

I need to read more non-fiction. LOL I'd be interested in reading Fast Food Nation with you when you do. I've seen the movie and like his show, 30 Days. I haven't hear of most of those other books you have. Except the Diana one, which I'm not interested in reading. I've seen a lot of programs on her.

You should do a Merty's Non-fiction Side Reads series. LOL

Hi!

I've read a book about America and American politics a few years ago. It is written by a Dutch correspondent who lived in NY for many years. It's not in English I believe, the title is: "Amerikanen zijn niet gek" - translated "Americans are not crazy".

I also want to read a book from another Dutch correspondent who lived in the Middle East for years. Haven't read it yet.
I want to read books like these but always end up with other books somehow!

Because They Hate by Brigitte Gabriel

I read about half of this book, real good but it was repeating itself it seemed. I had actually nominated this book for our non fiction choices last year. It would make a good discussion book but not hosted by me. Here's what I copied from the B & N site:

Brigitte Gabriel lost her childhood to militant Islam, when militant Muslims from throughout the Middle East poured into Lebanon and declared jihad against the Lebanese Christians. Because They Hate warns that the US is threatened by fundamentalist Islamic theology in the same way Lebanon was— radical Islam will stop at nothing short of domination of all non-Muslim countries.

Fiercely articulate and passionately committed, Because They Hate tells Gabriel's personal story as well as outlines the history, social movements, and religious divisions that have led to this critical historical conflict.

GREAT QUESTION! I haven't read anything of recent political history, theory, opinion, that I can remember. I find stories w/ 'political intrigue' very interesting. For instance in the royal court of Henry VIII, India's royals, Colonial America.
I love non-fiction also, but it's not a favorite genre. Mayfower was interesting but tmi. My favorite book by Nathaniel Philbrick is called "Sea Of Glory". Packed w/ history and the reason we don't know much about the topic has to do with politics of the era. No one liked the commodore of the US Exploration Expedition so no one talked about it! It was then overshadowed by the Civil War. Yet, the findings of these remarkable sailors and scientists founded the collection of the Smithsonian Institute!!

Jan, my mom has that book. I don't think she's read it yet. I'll have to ask her next time I see her. I think she's currently reading the Alan Greenspan (sp?) biography. She reads a lot of biographies. She finished the Eric Clapton one recently, I think.

I just finished reading a new political book and I highly recommend it. I think it's the best one I've read in years. It's The Clinton Diaries by Fred Petrovsky. I bought it on Amazon. It's written by Bill Clinton in the form of his diary that that he wrote during the Monica Lewinsky days. It's a bit racy, some profanity is in it. That bothered me a little, but it seemed in character. Someone suggested that I read Primary Colors--has anyone else read that? Any good? I'm looking for other political novels to read, too. Thanks!

Hi Mary Ann H,

Welcome! Wow... The Clinton Diaries, hmmm sounds real interesting to me, but what I am confused about is, you say the title is The Clinton Diaries, by Fred Petrovsky, then you said it was written by Bill Clinton in the formof his diary... So how did Fred P contribute?
