3. Miss Parrish says Mattie's writing is bad. Miss Wilcox says it is a gift. Why are their opinions and subsequent advice about her writing so different?

I think it was a matter of the times and the fact that Miss Wilcox was way before her time in terms of her writing. Miss Parrish thought that Mattie's writing was "morose" ( was that the word she used?) but Miss Wilcox wanted Mattie to make people reading her works to "feel" .

Webster's mom was strong. It certainly seemed a sign of the times with so much hard work for them to do. I knew farmers had it hard in those days but this was really showing it.

Well that didn't work the way I planned. Really pretty though and just as you described. a beautiful display of light in the stark, black sky. a perfect metaphor, not only for Mattie but Weaver too.

I just loved his mom. what a strong woman.

I tried to find about Miss Parrish again. I know she said that but who was it she borrowed books from and was there any other personal info on her when she was introduced to us or any other time?

I don't think so Lynne but I might have missed something. I just remember that she was Mattie's teacher but not much else about her. I do remember getting the idea that she wanted Mattie to write about "happy" things, which could be difficult being that she was going through so much inner turmoil.

I'm just looking through my post it notes and noted a few passage that I though were humorous...that's another thing I liked about the book~the way she injected humor here and there. I cracked up at the part when Mattie was saving candy for her sister cause it was "her time of the month". Made me think of my own chocolate cravings Eeker

They both had different concepts of what writing was about. That is for sure.

Miss Wilcox was a threat to the society at that time. She was a modern woman who could corrupt farm girls and lead them away to futher education and dreams away from the farm land .

Miss Parrish probably was more interested in just keeping her job and not making any trouble.

So far, I am liking the story.

I think that Mattie is a good girl and it seems to me she wants to please everyone. That can't be easy for a girl her age no matter what times we are or were living in.

LOL Nothing like peer pressure.

I have a few questions , too. Why would she without Grace's letters and not give them directly to the police? That didn't make any sense to me at all.

Hey Lynne

I'm not feeling so great so I'm going to log off for tonight. Thanks for the "real time" chat. I love those types of discussions. Anyway, maybe we can do it again cause, as usual, I have a lot more to say...lol

Royal raced the horses because what she said made him good and mad and he set out to just show her a thing or two.

Mattie agreed to marry him because she thought she loved him and that he loved her.

I think it was explained but I can't remember where. It is a fitting description of how Maddie's life goes from 'black & white' to multi-colored!
