Good Morning,
Starting my day with a nice brew of Columbian beans and this book, what a great way to start the morning. First of all, I love to cook and I love Julia Child. I remember when I first started to cook and I would watch Julia Child on PBS, and she had such an easy manner in how she would show me how to prepare dishes.
I have to say I've not mastered the art of French cooking but Julia Child gave me the motivation to go in the kitchen!
This book is a real treat as it describes the sights and sounds and FOOD of France in the 1940's. This book is a real treat, and I've only just started the first 25 pages!

I remember watching her on PBS also. I always thought that I could never relate to her, cuz she seemed so 'classy' and 'out of touch'. Isn't it funny how different people get different impressions?

They just had a special on her presented by the Food Network. It was soooooooo good. She came from a VERY wealthy family. And the things that she did during WWII was amazing!

My dad gave me a cookbook of hers and I had it for years just sitting there with the other cookbooks on the shelf.

The only recipe I ever made from it was one for french onion soup. After cutting a million onions into tiny little pieces (not to mention all the tears I shed) I found noone in my family was the least bit impressed. Frowner
So was it the soup or me? (Even put the specialty cheese on top too) buttt.................

That was the day I decided to leave the French cooking to the chefs.(Much happier that way.) Big Grin

I love French Onion soup!!! The best french onion soup I had was in Frankfurt, of a night of drinking and club hopping, I was young and free and full of energy, way into the late night, anyway we stopped at this little bistro and ordered French Onion Soup, it had that nice toasted cheese topping, the bread was thick and soaked into the soup, the onions were delicate slivers of fragrant spiced brothy soup, oh my! Perfect for a late night out.
I think I am going to have to make some French Onion soup this week!!!

I have to continue to gush about this book, I've read another 100 pages, and Julia's passion for teaching french cooking is so inspiring. And her love for France and her husband Paul are just so precious. The descriptions of France and the photos in the book are such a treat to see and read about. I think Julia had such perfect timing to go to France at such a time, right after the war, her husband was so supportive of her desire to learn how to cook the French way, and to introduce this way of cooking to the American public.
There is one picture of Julia cooking in her kitchen, it looks more like a cave then a kitchen, back then right after the war, when did what ever one had I suppose, but it doesn't matter what kind of kitchen one has old or new, it's the good recipes that one cooks in them!
Back to my book...

Merty,I heard this morning that they are making a movie about her and Merle Streep is starring in it. Can't wait. Use to watch her on PBS while I was living in the dorms. Like I was going to do any French cooking there. Go figure. It was more like a hot plate and a can of spaggettio's. Jan

Merty, Did you ever make your french onion soup? Thinking I might have to try it again sometime. I do love it. Especially with the cheese on top.

Thanks for reminding me, so this weekend I will make French Onion Soup and Fruit Pizza and maybe roast a chicken. Yum!

I make a great French Onion Soup...I find the secret ingredient is some Sherry and lots of golden onions... you need to put the time into getting them caramelized.

Last Thursday we went out to a French restaurant for our 26th anniversary known for their French Onion Soup....it was fab...the cheese was so baked and thick on top that you almost needed a knife to cut thru it.....rich and delicious.
