We have a website where we set up a poll. In mid-Sept we vote on a list of genres, the top 11 win (we combine Nov/Dec into one meeting). We then lay out a schedule of the genres trying to keep in mind the month. February is romance, October is mystery, etc. Then in a database, any group member may suggest a book for that genre, up to 5 suggestions per genre. We then vote on those 4-5 books for the month. We try to do the voting about 3-4 months in advance, but don't lay out the whole year at once. We have tried other ways, but doing genres has helped us all to read books we never would have chosen on our own.

I've always wondered if there are groups that stick to a single genre? The groups I have belonged to liked to mix things up-- one month do popular fiction, one month do a memoir, one month a mystery...

It might actually be fun to join a genre oriented group, perhaps one outside your normal pick-- see what and how a club like that picks their reads!

Great idea, genre specific groups would ensure you know (at least somewhat) what you're getting yourself into.
